Leisha Hailey, known for her role on The L Word, was kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight last weekend for kissing her girlfriend, fashion designer Nina Garduno.
The airlines doesn’t deny that’s what happened – they only point out that it was the excessive public display of affection – not the fact that both the participants were female – that led to the employees’ decision to remove Hailey and her partner from the flight.
The company cited complaints from other passengers. Employees approached the couple, an argument arose between the employees and the women, and they were soon escorted off the plane.
Hailey immediately Tweeted that she was kicked off for “being gay.”
How can a same-sex couple defend against the idea that it’s the public display of affection – period – not the fact that they’re gay, that is sparking the ire of onlookers? Obviously straight people can and do kiss in public and there is no clear line at which that becomes “too much,” leaving it to a subjectivity that is hard to trust.
What do you think?
